Erin chose an amazing sculpture that really needs to be seen in action to be appreciated. I would so love to see it in person...but it might put me in a trance! Breaking Wave is an anamorphic kinetic sculpture created for Biogen-Idec's new headquarters in Cambridge, MA. The sculpture was created by Plebian Design and Hypersonic.
When viewing this sculpture, it appears random and chaotic unless you happen to be standing in one of two hidden spots where the patterns are revealed...
Seriously, do yourself a favor and watch this short video of the piece in motion... you won't be sorry!
I ended up deciding to play with the idea of the gears that make the whole mechanism work and come to life so I picked out some Vintaj natural brass blanks in gear shapes. I chose to go for an asymmetrical design this time using two different gear shapes. I added textures to each gear after punching some holes in the blanks and then domed them.
To keep things from being too monochromatic and boring, I mixed sterling components in with the brass and brown glass. I also added a thin layer of silver paint onto the gears and then sealed with Renaissance Wax.
It was honestly great fun to just sit down at my work table and play with these. I think they are super cute and funky... hopefully my customers agree! Worse case scenario, I guess I could always make another set and then match them up.
This is a blog hop. You can check out what everyone else was inspired to make over on the Earrings Everyday blog HERE.
Great earrings! I love your mismatched design.
ReplyDeleteThese mismatched earrings look super fun, great work
ReplyDeleteVery cool design! I love what you did to the Vintaj gear and disk. I would love to try that sometime.
ReplyDeleteOh great idea! Love how you put your own spin on the vintage gear shapes, they look fantastic... and I'm always a huge fan of mixed metals! Full of fun and 'pizzazz'...xx
ReplyDeleteLove this interpretation. Very cool!
ReplyDeleteThose are such fun earrings. The little beaded dangles at the bottoms remind me of those perpetual motion balls that click-clack back and forth. I bet they're really fun to wear .
ReplyDeleteI love that you captured not only the hanging spheres of the art piece but also the gears that move them. I never thought of gears, and I have a ton of them. Texturing, coloring, and doming the gears gives them much visual interest. I always admire artists who do asymmetry well, as I have yet to master that. Very cool earrings!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Funky And cool! Great interpretation for this months challenge!
ReplyDeleteI love assymetry your eye can't help but be in motion between the difference until it is accepted as a whole, then the beads which are in motion continue the motion itself. The gears are super cool and I love how you treated them as opposed to keeping them flat and static. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI so appreciate your enthusiasm, Miss Sarajo! I loved the inner workings as much as I loved the sculpture. All those cogs and gears placed just so to make it work! I love the movement and the texture you added to this. Thank you for sharing your mini kinetic sculptures for the December We're All Ears Challenge. Check back on January 2nd for the next inspiration! Enjoy the day! Erin
